Faceless marketing: It's been gaining momentum in the online business world, with many saying it’s the next big thing.

But here's the thing—I have some reservations.

Today, I'm going to break down five reasons why I believe faceless marketing is more of a trend than a sustainable strategy for online businesses.

I want to preface this by saying that if you love it, do it! I’m not hating on you or saying it’s “wrong.” I’m just sharing my opinion on it, from the perspective of someone who’s been an online entrepreneur for 11 years and has seen many trends come and go.

1: Lack of human connection

When you remove the human element from your brand, you risk losing that authentic connection with your audience. People crave authenticity—they want to know the faces behind the brand, especially in a day and age where so many people are skeptical (rightfully) because there are sketchy people selling sketchy products & services online, and making sketchy income claims. Faceless marketing can feel impersonal and detached, leading to a lack of trust and loyalty from your audience.

Humans do not trust other humans very easily if they are hiding their face because hidden faces = hidden identity. And if buyers can’t be sure who is on the other side of the brand, or be sure they truly have the credentials they say they have, they perceive buying from you to be a high risk.

2: The only successful faceless brands I see are teaching faceless marketing.

Since most of the faceless brands we see are SELLING us faceless marketing, does faceless marketing really work that well for the majority of businesses that sell something else?

I think this is the biggest problem.

3. Long-term Sustainability.

Faceless marketing may yield short-term gains because it’s really popular right now, but what about the long haul? Building a sustainable business requires more than just hopping on trends. It demands a solid foundation built on trust, transparency, and genuine human connection.

I’ve been an online entrepreneur for almost 12 years so believe me when I say that you need to think long-term and not short term if you want to be successful online. I try not to follow too many trends. When everyone turns left, you turn right. It’s a very simple way to stand out in the market!

4. Limited Differentiation

In a sea of faceless brands, it's challenging to stand out and carve a unique identity for your business. Without a distinct personality or voice to set you apart, you run the risk of blending into the background and becoming just another nameless entity in the marketplace. I can’t tell you how many times each day I see a beige reel of someone stirring a coffee, or how much I see the same stock market videos.

The market is oversaturated with faceless brands. Which begs the question… if the simplest way to stand out these days is to show your face and be yourself, then why not?

5. Missed Opportunity for Connection.

One of the beauties of entrepreneurship is the ability to build meaningful connections with your audience. Faceless marketing robs you of that opportunity. By hiding behind a veil of anonymity, you miss out on the chance to forge genuine relationships and foster a loyal community around your brand.

Community in the online space is everything.

It’s what will keep your business alive and thriving for years. I have people buying from me who have followed my brand for 8+ years!

All you need is 1000 true fans. People who connect with you, your personality, your values, and need what you offer. 1000 true fans is all you need to run a thriving business for years. Because even if only 100 of them buy from you each year at $1k, that’s $100k a year.

But in my opinion, faceless brands will struggle to build that because people crave real

Why is faceless marketing so trendy in 2024?

I think the reason so many people gravitate to faceless marketing is because collectively, people are tired. And showing your face online in your content requires energy.

There are other reasons too of course. You might feel insecure about how you look, or feel that your race or religion would stop people buying from you.

Here’s what I’d like to say:

  • If you just don’t have the energy to make face-to-camera reels, don’t. You don’t HAVE to talk to the camera (I rarely do in my reels), but you can still show your face in some content. The trick to doing this without it feeling draining is to batch your content. Then you don’t have to physically muster the energy to do your make up and record a reel or story every day or week, just do it once a month.

My Content Batching Blueprint and Story Sprint will help you with this! They teach my step-by-step system for batching 1 month of content or Instagram stories in 1 day.

  • If you don’t want to show your face because you feel no one will buy from you because of your race or religion, let me ask you… do you really want to serve clients and customers who wouldn’t buy from you if they knew who you really were? I know I wouldn’t. I’d rather those people see me so they can go and buy from someone else. There are more than enough clients & customers in the world who will buy from you, regardless of your race, religion, gender, background, etc.

  • If you’re shy or you don’t want friends and family to see you posting, I feel you. Block friends and family. (It sounds harsher than it is but this is your business account, not a personal account!) Then start small with your profile photo and real first name on your bio.

My Honest Opinion About Master Resell Rights

Disclaimer: I’m not trying to yuck someone’s yum here. If you sell a course with MRR and it’s working for you, you do you! This episode is here to make sure anyone who is considering MRR sees the cons and not just the pros.

Article

In the vast ocean of online opportunities, one trend that's been making waves lately is the purchase of courses with master resell rights (MRR). It's a tempting idea: buy a course, gain the rights to sell it, and pocket 100% of the profits. What’s not to like? BUT is it truly the golden ticket to success, or could it be a potential pitfall disguised as a shortcut? Let's delve into the realities of this trend and why, despite its allure, it might not be the wisest choice for your business.

Understanding Master Resell Rights:

Before we explore the pitfalls, let's clarify what master resell rights entail. Essentially, when you buy a course with MRR, you're granted permission to sell it yourself and keep all the profits.

1. Oversaturated Market:

Picture this: you stumble upon a seemingly irresistible offer for a course with MRR. However, if it's readily available to you, it's equally accessible to countless others in your niche. This leads to an oversaturated market flooded with identical products and brands selling in identical ways, diminishing their perceived value and making it challenging for you to stand out.

2. Reputation Risks:

Associating your brand with products you didn't personally create can tarnish your reputation and credibility if that creator or brand gets in trouble.

I personally don’t resell anyone else’s products unless I know the person well (i.e. we’ve met multiple times and I know their values, trust them to be an ethical person, and know their product is amazing.)

3. Integrity in Online Business:

It’s catching a bit of a scammy reputation. I’m not saying it is a scam. I’m saying that there has been a lot of sketchy people selling it as their own, changing the name of it, and so on. This leads to people buying it thinking they’re buying something else, and realizing they’ve been duped and it’s the same course they may already have bought, or seen around.

I’m also pretty convinced that this MRR thing is the reason why there’s SO many women on Instagram saying they can help you “make money online” who have 2 followers and have never actually made money online.

I’m a big believer that if you haven’t gotten real results with something, or you don’t have any experience with it, you should not be selling something about it.

People with no online business experience shouldn’t be teaching people about business.

It’s like someone who’s never performed open heart surgery offering to perform open heart surgery on you.

Try to avoid the trend of selling something just because you think it will make money quickly and easily. You don’t need to do that. All of us have enough knowledge and expertise we can monetize. We all have at least one transformation we’ve personally been through successfully that we can package up into an offer that helps others achieve the same transformation. (And it doesn’t have to be related to making money! I have students who manage podcasts,

“But I’m a beginner and I need to make money. Aren’t I supposed to fake it til I make it?”

No.

Go out there and get some experience!

  • Offer to take on discounted beta clients or students

  • Offer to do projects for free in exchange for testimonials

  • If you want to teach something you have not achieved yet, document your journey to achieving it on Instagram. THEN sell an offer teaching the transformation.

4. Quality Control Concerns:

Just because a course comes with master resell rights doesn't guarantee its quality. Sacrificing quality for the sake of quick profits can damage your reputation and erode the trust of your audience. Instead of prioritizing short-term gains, focus on creating high-quality, original content that adds genuine value to your audience's lives.

5. Embracing Authenticity and Long-Term Growth:

Rather than succumbing to the trend of master resell rights, consider investing your time and energy into creating your own high-quality offers. Whether it's low-ticket digital products or high-ticket services, once you find something that sells well it will outlast the trend of MRR. While it may require more effort upfront, the long-term rewards far outweigh the allure of quick profits.

(PS- I have a free list of 100 digital product ideas to spark your creativity!)

6. A Path to Sustainable Success:

In today's competitive landscape, authenticity and uniqueness are your greatest assets. By embracing your individuality, you'll not only outshine the competition but also build a resilient and sustainable business for the future.

The only thing that makes you stand out online is YOU. Don’t remove yourself from your brand by selling something someone else made, in the exact way they’ve taught 1000’s of others to sell it.

I created and now sell The Content Batching Blueprint - my method for batching 1 month of content in 1 day. There are already 100’s of creators teaching you how to make money online or sell on Instagram but very few teach it the way I do. This is one simple way that I stand out.

Consistency is overrated. Here's why...

'Consistent' does NOT mean 'constant.'

You do not need to post to Instagram every day.

You don't need to push a podcast episode out, come rain or shine, every single week of the year.

Your business will not collapse if you don't send a newsletter out for a couple of weeks.

To me, being consistent simply means you're on the ball more often than not. It doesn't mean you're on the ball all of the time.

Tune in to this episode to learn:

- Why consistency is pointless without the S word.

- Why you don't always have to be consistent and how to know when you can 'slack off' without breaking your business.

- What happened when I didn't post on Instagram for a whole month.

Ok this title may have been ever so slightly click baity because the fact is that consistency with online marketing in particular is important, we all know that.

But consistency is useless without the S word, and i'll explain what that is in a bit.

There are even times in business where you don't HAVE to be as consistent anymore.

So if you're interested in a gentler and smarter approach to consistency, keep listening.

First of all, we need to stop confusing 'consistent' with 'constant'

You do not need to market constantly. You don't need that pressure. When you put that expectation on yourself, you end up feeling like you're on a marketing hamster wheel or a content creation hamster wheel.

To me, consistent simply means you're on the ball more often than not. It doesn't mean you're on the ball every single day.

So pick a marketing schedule that would feel sustainable to you. Something that isn't every day if that's not within your capacity. And don't feel bad about not being able to show up on socials or post something daily - it's rare that anyone with a life and no team can do this. If you can outsource it - great! If not, don't pressure yourself. You'll be consistent with your marketing if it feels sustainable. That's the key to consistency.

You don't always NEED to be consistent.

If you are going through a challenging or busier than normal season of life, don't also add the pressure to be consistently marketing to your already toppling todo list. Same goes for if you're struggling right now with an illness, grief or something else that's hard. If you don't have the capacity to hire out your marketing then give yourself permission to take a break from it or better yet, try to automate it. Or focus only on 1-2 marketing avenues, and pause the rest for now. It can feel scary, but there's peace in believing & trusting that even if say you stop posting on Instagram for a while and it damages your reach, you're resilient and smart enough to build it up again when you're ready.

I haven't posted for a month to Insta because I've been busy with other things, but my insights still show my account engagement is growing and that's just from a post i made a month ago. So I hope that makes it a little less scary to take a break if you need it.

Another time you don't need to be as consistent is when you've built your business and credibility. I remember interviewing Maya Elious years ago and asking her why she stopped live streaming so often and she said, "because I don't have to. I've built my community and my reputation thanks to that, I don't HAVE to live stream much anymore."

Consistency is most important when you haven't built your community, credability, and grown an audience of people who would love to buy anything you offer. So when you've done those things, you can ease off on being consistent with certain types of marketing, like live streaming.

Another time you may not want to prioritize consistency is if you're not in a growth phase. If you are in a season where you just want to focus on nurturing the audience of potential clients that you've already built, you can get clients from that instead of focusing on growth. That might look like nurturing your email list instead of consistently posting to instagram, or asking for referrals and creating a referral program.

Consistency is pointless without strategy.

You can consistently post let's say an IG post every day. But without strategy, those posts will hear crickets. They won't get engagement. And they won't lead to clients.

I see a lot of business owners unsure what they should post and that's where you need to start. Because you can't have consistency without strategy.

Consistency compounds, it builds momentum and helps you grow and get in front of more people.

But strategy is what converts those people to loyal followers and clients. One without the other isn’t as effective.

10 Mistakes That Are Keeping Your Income Below $5k a Month

  1. Not investing in business education and learning from entrepreneurs that are ahead of you (Podcast timestamp: 4:10 )

There are a lot of online business owners trying to reinvent the wheel in the name of saving money. This is what I did too when I first started my freelance design business. But it was a mistake because yes, it saved me the $500 - $8000 I could have invested in courses and coaching, but it took me 2-3 years to figure things out on my own. In those 2-3 years I earned less than £10k a year because I was teaching myself everything (which is slow and requires a lot of mistake-making before you find what works.)

Yes, we are all unique business owners and there’s no one-size-fits-all business structure or marketing strategy we can all follow for success. But it’s wise to pick and choose from other people’s proven structures instead of building the whole thing from scratch. If I had, maybe I would have earned £30k+ a year instead of less than £10k?

Would, let’s say, £5k in business education have been worth £30k in sales?

It’s a no-brainer - of course it would!

(This obviously depends on if you have the money to invest in your education. If you are struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table, it’s probably unwise to invest in your education right now. But you can look for a stable job that meets your financial needs and then work on your business.)

2. Constantly rebranding (9:26)

In my first few years as an online graphic designer, I was constantly rebranding. And it was a waste of time. Because honestly? There will never be a design that is 100% perfect because perfect doesn’t exist.

And if I’m being even more honest? Your clients don’t care if your logo or website isn’t perfect.

Just get it done and promise yourself that you won’t tweak it again for at least 6 months. Habitually rebranding is a form of procrastination that helps you avoid the scary work of actually marketing your services.

3. Relying solely on one risky marketing strategy (16:21)

Some marketing strategies are riskier than others, like referrals and social media marketing. Both are great! But if you rely solely on one of them for clients, it’s risky because you don’t control either strategy. Whether or not you get referrals is down to other people. And social media is controlled by an algorithm that can change at any time.

If you’ve relied on one marketing strategy and found it’s dried up and your income is endangered, take it as a lesson and learn to have 2-3 marketing strategies. At least one needs to be a safer strategy you have more control over, like email marketing.

4. Making a PDF your opt-in freebie instead of a free email course (19:41)

I have PDF’s and I also have free email courses. (A new one is coming out next month!)

I’ve had free email courses for a decade. And they convert far more clients and customers than my PDF’s. Plus, they help my subscribers get into the habit of opening my emails (whereas people often sign up for free PDF’s and then never open emails from that person again.)

Here are a few more reasons you might not be earning $5k a month…

24:09 You are charging what you’re worth, not what the result of your service is worth

26:41 You give up on marketing strategies too quickly

29:07 You rely on motivation or passion to fuel your work

30:59 You send 1 email a month or don’t have an email list at all

33:24 You work full-time hours. (Listen to the podcast episode for why this reason made the list!)

37:43 You don’t have a niche or clear messaging

40:00 You kinda just hope clients roll in without putting effort into marketing

I go in-depth on each of these points in the podcast episode. Hit “play” on the player below or listen to this episode on Apple or Spotify!
